Sahara Restaurant

Theme: Mediterranean

We have known this restaurant for a long time, yet have not been here for more than 5 years. Coming back to this restaurant an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood brought back a lot of old memories.

Sahara has expanded into a full-scale restaurant from the take-out Turkish-style restaurant, and has done so with style. When walking in, you can see the take-out section of the restaurant. The rest of the restaurant is usually crowded with New York locals, but the decor definitely takes you to the serene Mediterranean shore.

The bread that they serve you is home-made, and we highly recommend you order that with the Hor D’Oeuvres Platter, which comes with a variation of sauces. Each of these sauces were delicious and complimented the bread really well.

One thing we highly recommend you order is a shepherd’s salad with cheese. The dressing is simple yet perfectly delectable. You cannot got to Sahara without ordering a shepherd’s salad. It simply ruins the purpose of going.

We ordered 2 hot appetizers, which were the felafel and the Sahara Kibbeh. The Felafel goes good if you order it with pita and hummus, and you can make yourself a sandwich with a shepherds salad in it. The felafel was not too greasy, which we liked. The kibbeh was also deep fried, but the recipe is a very old one and is very popular in the middle east, especially Israel. We felt that both appetizers were good but lacked the “wow” factor.

Our entree was the Iskender kebab. The sauce was tangy and the doner was cooked perfectly. One flaw in this dish was the bread at the bottom, which was soggy. The entire dish itself was filling, so be careful not to fill up on bread when ordering this.

Our advice is come here with empty stomachs and full wallets. Their servings are quite large, and the cost of the food is more than it used to be, which disappointed us. However, this will always be one of our favorite restaurants when we come to Brooklyn.

We would love to give this place more than 3 forks, but to be fair and objective:

Our score:

Great

Great
