Theme: Modern European

Walking in the theater district of London brings a nostalgia of New York City. We walked off the Bond Street Station in the underground, and walked past a number of restaurants nearby. L’Autre Pied is concealed behind a bunch of other restaurants, so be careful not to be tempted to go to one of those places first.

Walking in to L’Autre Pied makes you feel like you’re high-class. We felt a little bit under-dressed coming in here. The setting is very contemporary and comfortable at the same time. It was not too crowded when we arrived, but it got much more crowded as the dinner progressed.

Their wine selection is plentiful. Like most restaurants, it’s probably better to get a bottle of wine than a glass if you are here with more than 3 people. We ordered from the pre-theatre menu, which is only available between 6:00 and 7:00 pm. A 2 course meal is 17.95 pounds, and a 3 course meal is 20.95 pounds.

For the first course you could choose between a pan fried mackerel and a carmelised onion and sage veloute (a soup). The pan fried mackerel, glazed with maple syrup, included fennel and pink grapefruit. It was, without a doubt, cooked to perfection. The veloute, partially prepared tableside, had onion lyonnaise and Vacherin Mont d’Or. It was very smooth and exceptionally tasty.

The second choice was a choice of old spot pork or celeriac and herb risotto. The pork, again, was cooked to perfection, something that is very difficult to do. Its taste was one of the many things that had a “wow” factor. The risotto was also cooked very well, and was very tangy. The caramelised celiac puree complimented it perfectly.

One of the dessert course was either a warm cinnamon custard with an English rhubarb, and a sorbet, with had a unique hot-cold combination that was intriguing. The sorbet was tangy and exciting. The other option was a soft bleu cheese from Auvergne, France. It was served with a cranberry jelly and crackers. This was the least exciting part of the meal but was still absolutely delicious.

Overall our assessment is that you cannot stay at London and not eat at this place. Even with a tight budget, we don’t think you will ever experience anything in London as unique and delicious as this place. This is definitely going to be one of the highlights of your trip, so enjoy it.

Our score:
